Sri Lanka with Jasmine Trails

Sri Lanka, The land of serendipity

Click map to enlarge

This tear-shaped island nation located in the Indian Ocean may be small, but it is packed with magical proportions of exciting things to see and experience.

Archaeological sites such as Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa are treasure troves of temples, cave frescoes, statues and Buddhist monasteries. Endless pristine beaches and verdant hills offer the traveler a time out and relaxation like no other place.

The sprawling tea gardens of Sri Lanka are not just a brilliant place to go for tea tasting but also learn all about the colonial history of the famous Ceylon tea.

With leopards, elephants, whales and an abundant birdlife, Sri Lanka is every wildlife lover’s paradise. Add to this delicious food and the warmth of its people, Sri Lanka is an alluring destination that offers the best of everything.

Here are just a few of the places we would like to show you. Click on the images of the destinations below to know all about them.

ANURADHAPURA

Anuradhapura Ruvanveli Seya

ANURADHAPURA

Built around a cutting of the Bodhi tree in the 3rd century BC, the sacred city of Anuradhapura is one of the world’s continuously inhabited cities and is home to the ruins of some of the greatest structures in the ancient world. Colossal brick stupas that contain priceless relics, monasteries that housed thousands of monks, ancient pools and ornate temples were built over a thousand years of rule. Many of these remain in use for daily worship and ceremonies.

Interestingly the Bodhi tree which was planted in the 3rd Century BC still exists and is the oldest historically documented tree in the world.

GALLE

Galle Light house

GALLE

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic city is synonymous with the Sri Lanka’s colonial-era history.

This old trading port is a delight to explore on foot, with its imposing Dutch-colonial buildings, grand mansions, ancient mosques and churches. Don’t miss browsing the numerous stylish boutiques, cafes, book shops and ‘antique shops’ that dot the lanes. The beautifully located 17th century Galle Fort is the centre of attraction here, surrounded by the ocean on three sides. Jasmine Trails recommends a stay in one of the beautifully restored hotels to really take in the history and charm of the city.

SIGIRIYA FORTRESS

Sigiriya Fortress, aerial view Sri Lanka

SIGIRIYA FORTRESS

Built atop a remarkable monolithic rock pillar that rises some 600 feet (180 metres) above the surrounding plain, it is not surprising that Sigiriya Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The jaw dropping location was selected by King Kashyapa in the 5th century CE for his new capital. Today this citadel in the sky is one of the most popular landmarks in Sri Lanka. Sigiriya, which literally means ‘Lion Rock’, was named for the monumental carved lion that guards the pathway to the palace. Unfortunately, the head of the lion is no longer there but the gigantic paws at the entrance to the palace are intact.

The climb up is not for the faint-hearted, but the ascent promises wonderful attractions. The splendid wall frescoes, ruins of moats, water gardens and cave shrines – not to mention 360-degree panoramic views over the horizon-make the effort absolutely worth it!

YALA

Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. In the image are the bottoms of Elephants going to drink water. Please do not miss the youngster in the middle, protected by the Old Dames

YALA NATIONAL PARK

The nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of deciduous forests, scrubs, grasslands and lagoons make up one of the best habitats for a wide array of animals and birds. Apart from being home to wildlife such as crocodiles, elephants, sambar, sloth bears, jackals, wild buffalo and many varieties of birds including migratory birds, it also has the world’s biggest concentration of leopards.

Adding to the romance and mystery of the jungle is the monastic settlement of Sithulpawwa, a 2000-year-old pilgrim site that is located deep in the heart of Yala National Park. The rocky outcrops and cave shelters housed monks who came to seek spiritual learning and to meditate. The serenity and calmness of the monastery justifies its original name, “Hill of the quiet mind”.

KANDY

Kandy Temple of the Tooth Relic

KANDY

Kandy is located smack in the middle of Sri Lanka on the Kandy plateau, surrounded by picturesque mountains and rainforest. As the capital city of the last remaining independent kingdom in the island, Kandy eventually fell to the British colonists in the 19th century, opening up the hill country to tea cultivation. A short drive out brings the traveler to spectacular rolling tea gardens where it is worth seeing the specialized process that goes in to brewing that perfect cup.

However, the city is best known for the Temple of the Tooth which houses, perhaps, the most sacred relic of Buddha. The wonderfully cool weather, a lake in the middle of town, the imposing colonial-era and Kandyan architecture and vibrant culture make a Kandy one of the most popular tourist spots of the island.

Jasmine Trails highly recommends a train journey from Kandy to Hatton, which is one of the most glorious ways to see the rolling countryside and tea plantations. Enjoy the scenic views as the train winds up slowly, passing over arched bridges that look would look at home in the Scottish Highlands.

POḶONNARUWA

Polonnaruwa, in Sri Lanka is an ancient city which originates as far back at the 4th Century

POḶONNARUWA

Polonnaruwa is an ancient city which originates as far back at the 4th Century. The city was at the height of its power in the 12th Century after its armies repulsed the Chola invaders from India. It is by far the most intact and impressive of the ancient cities in Sri Lanka, with a unique irrigation complex, ruins of palaces and pavilions and relic houses. Exquisite statues, carvings and inscriptions offer a rich display of artistry, the most iconic being the reclining Buddha at Gal Vihara. The small town is an ideal place to slow down and is easy to explore on bicycle too. In 1982 Polonnaruwa was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with Anuradhapura and Kandy it forms the Cultural Triangle.

Closeby is Minneriya National Park where the largest gathering of Asian elephants on earth occurs at a manmade water tank annually between July and September. Take a jeep safari for a wonderful opportunity to observe these lumbering mammals in their natural setting.

ELLA

Hatton Tea Plantations

NUWARA ELIYA

Once the favoured, cool-climate sanctuary of the British civil servants and tea-planters in Ceylon, Nuwara Eliya continues to attract visitors to its verdant surroundings of waterfalls, tea plantations, gardens and lakes.

Lovely colonial-era buildings hark back to the days of genteel living, fox hunts, horse races and cricket. Relive some of that fantastic nostalgia by staying in one of the charming colonial hotels that still retain their unique by gone heritage. Located at an altitude of 1,868 m (6,128 ft) in the central highlands, this “Little England” is well known for its fine orange pekoe tea. Don’t miss a visit to one of the tea factories to learn all about tea production in Sri Lanka, along with some tea tasting.

With its temperate climate and beautiful landscape, Nuwara Eliya a wonderful place to unwind whether by relaxing in the gardens of your hotel, going on nature walks or playing a round of golf.
